Virtual museums and galleries

[See also the Virtual History section. This page is no longer maintained, its content now relocated to the web site for the Culture & Heritage Informatics module.]

Virtual (3D) museums fall into two categories: [1] digital representations of real world museums, with their collections, and [2] digital reconstructions of worlds or environments.

Babylon
An extensive and well conceived reconstruction of (at least some part of) ancient Babylon including a clickable map (teleporting to major buildings such as the Temple of Ishtar, the rivers Tigris and Euphrates, the Hanging Gardens, and the Ishtar Bridge), a basic English-to-Sumerian dictionary, and a number of richly annotated exhibits. The free ‘gift shop’, however, reminds one that this is closer to theme park than to archaeological site.
