At the end of Q4 2009, total registered accounts in the virtual worlds sector reached 803m, reports market analyst KZero,  a 19.7% (132m) quarter on quarter increase, from 671m registered accounts in Q3.

Impressive growth figures apart, with total number of all users almost doubling (192%) in the short space of one year, it’s also interesting to note that just over 95% of all virtual world users are under the age of 25.  While in the 25 and older age group the increase over the year was 30.4%–a significant enough figure to warrant academics taking virtual worlds very seriously–the most meteoric growth has been in the 5 to 10 and the 15 to 25 age groups (both more than doubling).
