CISM as of this week has its own island, solipCISM, the name chosen by Prof Les Hatton (SL resident Algy Morpork) who, following our conversations at the end of last semester, pushed the purchase through.  Les had been a very impressed second marker of Razart’s Tower of London project (see post below), and had warmed to the idea of promoting student work–hence also promoting the Faculty to potential candidates outside–through in-world exhibitions.

So I’m now co-“Owner” of the island, with Les and Darrel; and this weekend I started work on construction, guided by what I believe to be our consensual vision of what we wish to achieve–on the one hand a public showcase for the Faculty, promoting the work of students and staff and thus serving as a marketing platform to prospective students, on the other hand a 3D virtual learning environment embracing all the academic content and functionality we have within Blackboard.  As a component of the public face of the virtual Faculty I’m also proposing that we host public lectures in the amphitheatre.

A selections of screenshots below showing the early constructions: view of the island from the arrival point / orientation zone, the Library, labelling by module name of bookshelves in the Library, the amphitheatre, the research building, patio on the roof of the research building, and the student ‘Leisure Zone’.
